The Best Way To Clean A Computer Monitor
Different types of monitors require slightly different cleaning methods. However, some basics are the same. One is that you should never spray the cleanser onto the monitor screen. If liquid gets into spaces it should not be, you can harm the unit. Household window cleansers contain ammonia, which should never be used on LCD style screens. And you should always clean with lint free cloths, one for wiping and another for drying. Never use paper towels, as these can scratch and leave lint behind.
You should power down your monitor or laptop when cleaning it. It is safer to completely unplug it, but not many people will actually do so. Just be sure that you do not let any liquid run or drip into any cases or vent holes. Avoid speakers also.
If you do not know what type of monitor you have, here is how to tell the difference. CRT styles are bulky and have a glass front. If you have a laptop, you do not have a CRT. LCD and plasma styles appear to be a gel substance, and must be handled carefully. Do not press against these screens, and try to not even touch them.
Wipe away any dust with a dry anti-static cloth. Then clean with either disposable cloths designed for cleaning monitors or a small amount of liquid placed directly on the cloth. For plasma screens, you should use a cleanser made especially for this purpose. You can use vinegar or rubbing alcohol for cleaning LCD styles. A household glass cleaner works well for CRT types, but apply it to the cloth, not directly to the screen. As soon as you finish cleaning, wipe the screen dry immediately to prevent spotting and streaking.
Never open the case to clean inside. However, you should clean the outside of the case in the same way you clean the screen. Remove all dust and then place your liquid directly onto a soft cloth and clean.
Some people need to clean their screens more frequently than others. Obviously, you should clean it when it looks dirty. But there are subtle signs that can indicate the need. For example, you might notice that your display has grown less bright or that colors seem duller. Regardless, clean it every few months at minimum.
Directions provided in the manual from the manufacturer should always take precedence over any other instructions. If your warranty is still in effect, you want to be sure to follow their directions. If you do not, it can sometimes be used as an excuse to void the warranty.
